This 4-5 minute video highlights a topic we discuss often as umpires, regardless of what associations you’re working: The letter of the rule vs. the spirit of the rule. In the video, Barry Mano discusses some things to consider when we enforce rules, and what the repercussions of those decisions are.
I encourage ADs, coaches, and officials to take a few minutes to watch this video. The perspective it offers will benefit us all and hopefully lead to an enhanced understanding of the difficult calls/no-calls that are made, and how rules are enforced.
